Troubleshooting

Problem

When trying to activate the authorisation code you receive the following message: “Please run this utility from your product’s installation folder.(echoid.dat)” Additionally when starting AMOS you receive error 11,4 saying there is no licence.

Cause

The problem is that the echoid.dat file is missing.
This is often due to permission on the account performing the installation where the file is placed under the user’s profile as it does not have permission to write the file in the correct location.

Resolving The Problem

This problem has been reported to SPSS Development. To resolve this issue simply create an echoid.dat file in notepad with the following contents only:
0x004
(Note above it is zero x zero zero four)

Creating an echoid.dat file:
Once the above is entered in notepad, save the file to your desktop and rename the file to echoid.dat and to do this you will also need to ensure the file extension is visible by having the check the box for “Hide extensions for known file types” un checked otherwise it will keep the .txt extension (which is hidden by default).
In Windows Explorer select Options>Folder and search options, then select the “View” tab to check the setting for extensions of known file types.

Move the file to the correct location:
Once the file is on the desktop and it has been confirmed that it does not have hidden extensions then move the file to the folder where AMOS is installed.

For example, the default folders for IBM SPSS AMOS 22:

For 64 bit Windows –

C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\SPSS\AMOS\22\

For 32 bit Windows –

C:\Program Files\IBM\SPSS\AMOS\22\

If you have added the file and still receiving the message please uninstall the application and then install IBM SPSS AMOS by right clicking the installation file and selecting ‘run as administrator’ as this should elevate the privileges during the installation.

As an alternative there is an echoid.dat file linked below. Download the file echoid.dat and chose to save it to your Desktop then follow the steps above to move it to the correct location.

Also please ensure when installing the application and running the licencing wizard to right click and select to run as administrator to ensure you have sufficient permissions to perform the tasks as suggested in the documentation.
